World Premiere: Frederick Tillis’ A Symphony of Songs
and
Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony
On commission from The Hartford Chorale, African-American composer Dr. Frederick Tillis composed A Symphony of Songs. The work is based on the poetry of Hartford Pulitzer-prize-winner Wallace Stevens. Continuing the poetry theme, the second piece was Vaughan Williams’ The Sea Symphony, a haunting, evocative setting of Walt Whitman’s poetry.
